Searching and Pure Salt This was one of three or four books used to undeceive me back in 1984 when I was building my house on the sand. Few books show the internal evidences of a change in the governing disposition (The new birth) like this one. Often volume 6 of Owen's works are mentioned as solid gold, but the 7th volume, where this treatise is from, is just as practical and edifying.
Oh What a Saviour! This is the suffering of Christ detail that Mel Gibson's movie leaves out.
The real agony of Christ is the garden.
What it really meant for Christ to "drink the cup"
Jonathan Edwards never looks at such things superficially. If your affection to the saviour is waning, maybe this will help to enliven your thankfulness of what a great gift substitionary atonement really is.
This was convicting If ever there was an example of God taking a destroyed life, remolding the clay, and making him into a vessel fit for the Master's use, my friend Mike Waters is an example. He learned to preach in a mission after an amazing conversion. He was a student in the Puritan Seminary (Joel Beeke one of his instructers), but as well a student who has benefitted from sitting at the feet of the Puritan writers he has grown to love.
Great Sermon! I have been a lover of Edwards as well as the puritans for some time, but I have never heard this sermon. I was deeply moved by its provocative power. This message in the hands of our sovereign God will most surely bring the lost to a saving faith.
Moving and Gripping This is a moving message of personal reflections from the notes taken at the funeral service of Marilyn Martin, the dear wife of Albert N. Martin whose messages have been received so well here on Sermon Audio. One of the more gripping reflections was the eulogy given by their daughter Heidi. I have heard a lot of funeral services and reflections but this one was one to make me let go of my too eager grip of the world and its empty baubles and to reflect on the place appointed for all the living.
It also answers the question of why dear saints may suffer so excruciatingly as their frail body is in a dying state, and an example of patient suffering in the midst of such a trial.
An Amazing Story I attempt to listen to all testimonies from Reformed Baptist Pastors, but this may have been the most interesting and gripping of all of them. Especially the part about the trip to North Carolina with his grandmother and the sad ending to this journey. But God's grace is amazing in how Pastor Carter was converted.
Great Sermon! TMS
I haven't yet listened to this reading, so I may be off with this comment.
I don't think we can call Wesley superstitious because "he resorted to casting lots to determine the will of God." Isn't that pretty much what Acts 1:21-26 says in the selection of Matthias over Joseph?
Interesting Letter to Wesley I found this old tract at a Calvinistic Baptist church in Holland MI on the tract rack and I asked if I could narrate it for Sermon Audio. I found it interesting that Whitefield addresses Wesley's hints at Wesley's view of perfectionism, but even more interesting - the fact that Wesley resorted to casting lots to determine the will of God. For a man who is said to know numerous languages and be much used of God, he sure was superstitious.
Jonathan Edward's Spider Imagery Future Punishment Intolerable- sermon contains another infamous Edwards spider reference: "You have often seen a spider, or some other noisome insect, when thrown into the midst of a fierce fire, and have observed how immediately it yields to the force of the flames. There is no long struggle, no fighting against the fire, no strength exerted to oppose the heat, or to fly from it; but it immediately stretches forth itself and yields; and the fire takes possession of it, and at once it becomes full of fire."
Quoted at State Funeral for Ronald Reagan As Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan, (The first woman)she was asked to read at his state funeral. The text was from a sermon
subtitled, A City on A Hill, by John Winthrop. 1588-1649 First Governor of Massachusetts.
{From forerunner.com) While en route to the New World on board the Arabella, John Winthrop wrote a sermon entitled "A Model of Christian Charity," in which he outlined the purposes of God for New England.

Sobering Sermon! From the 1911 encyclopedia
McCHEYNE, ROBERT MURRAY (1813-1843), Scottish divine, was born at Edinburgh on the 21st of May 1813, was educated at the University and at the Divinity Hall of his native city, .and held pastorates at Larbert, near Falkirk, and Dundee. A mission of inquiry among the Jews throughout Europe and in Palestine, and a religious revival at his church in Dundee, made him feel that he was being called to evangelistic rather than to pastoral work, but before he could carry out his plans he died, on the 25th of March 1843. McCheyne, though wielding remarkable influence in his lifetime, was still more powerful afterwards, through his Memoirs and Remains, edited by Andrew Bonar, which ran into far over a hundred English editions. Some of his hymns, e.g. When this passing world is done, are well known.
Fight the Good Fight! This is a terrific reading! Here is a tiny excerpt:
"The Christian fight is good because it's fought under the best of generals -- the leader and commander of all believers is our divine Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Savior of perfect wisdom, infinite love and Almighty power. The captain of our salvation never fails to lead his soldiers into victory. He never makes any errors in judgements, never commits any mistakes ... Surely this is good."
He goes on to give six more powerful reasons why Paul calls the Christian's war with remaining sin a good fight.
"Finally, let us remember ... a few more battles and the last trumpet shall sound and the Prince of Peace shall come and reason on a renewed earth. A few more struggles and conflicts and then we shall bid an eternal goodbye to warfare and to sin and to sorrow and to death. The let us fight on to the last and never surrender.
"Thus saith the Captain of our salvation, 'He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he will be my son,' (Rev. 21:7). May we never forget that without fighting, there can be no holiness while we live.
(Also, the reading by T. Sullivan is superb).
sound principles here. It is strange that there are no comments on the writings of this eminent Christian, so i shall place the first (?) one.
The Lord used the challenging writings of Arthur Pink to transform my life from a "nominal" Christian only, which drove me to my knees in repentance.(On the text Hebrews 12:14)
Since then the Lord has been pleased by His grace, to use other writings by A.W.P. to help and encourage on my pilgrim pathway, and the tract from Romans 7 is no exception.
May this be used to help someone else as well who is crying out as Paul "o wretched man that i am...." !
Thankyou sermonaudio for placing some of A.W. Pink's works on the site, he would have been amazed that the Lord is using his writings in such a way, when he was saddened at the lack of spirituality in his day amongst those who "professed" to be born again.
Quite the Narration There were a number of mp3 narrations of Edwards done for www.ccel.org, but NOTHING like this.
I read a comment once on another web site that T.S. was turned away from doing narrations for CCEL because the web master thought that he was TOO passionate!?
