God has promised David He would never withdraw His presence and His promises from his family line. Ultimately this will be fulfilled in the coming one thousand year earthly kingdom. The military conquests that established and secured the boundaries of his kingdom are recorded in their time and history.
Through it all we are reminded his victories are by means of the Lord.
During this time frame David writes Psalm 60 giving us insight into his perspective of his circumstances, of the matters of concern to his heart and his confidence in the Lord.
David honors the covenant he had made with Jonathan by tracking down his son, Mephibosheth. He shows great kindness and generosity by restoring to him the family's lands and personally providing for his daily needs for the rest of his life.
In another account when the king of the Ammonites dies, he attempts to show his respect by sending his condolances to his son who has assumed his reign. That is not received as he intended, but as a threat to overthrow them, resulting in another battle.
