David has moved the captial from Hebron to Jerusalem after driving out the Jebusites. The Philistines have been defeated to a state that they are no longer a threat to Israel. The nation is experiencing a time of peace and prosperity.
David desires to build a permanent place for God's presence to dwell on the earth, but God gives him three reasons he is not to be the builder of His house. In the course of that dialogue between David, Nathan the prophet and God, God reveals His intention for 'the house of David.'
God makes a five-fold promise to David that becomes known as the Davidic Covenant. This covenant expands on the aspect of the Abrahamic Covenant promising him descendents who will become 'a great nation' and ultimately the line of the promised Messiah. Highly significant is the unconditional nature of the covenant made by God to David.

God's covenant guarantees the kingship of David's line. 5. God's sovereign grace is based on Himself - not on the recipients. 6. Pray boldly for God to fulfill His promises. 7. God's word partakes of God's character.
