Theme: Despite rejection, followers of Christ must proclaim the truth about the gospel and the consequences of rejecting it. In v. 9, the command to heal the sick is given. The healing brought authenticity to the message. While the gift of healing is not in existence today, we can learn from this passage the principle of meeting people's physical needs in order to share the gospel which meets their greatest need. We show our faith by our works. In vv. 10-11a, Jesus teaches the disciples how to respond to rejection. We must know rejection will occur. We are responsible to share the truth. In v. 11b, we see the importance of reacting with truth when other's reject the message. We need to respectfully hold to the truth and continue to share with others who are receptive to hear. Don't be swayed by the ways the world's philosophy seeks to twist the truth, but strive instead for Christian maturity and hold firm to the truth of God's Word. In v. 12, Jesus recites the consequences of rejecting the gospel message. Here we recognize that knowledge equals accountability. We will held accountable for the truth we have heard. God has called us to be faithful to proclaim the message of the gospel. As we do this, we trust the Lord of the Harvest to do His saving work!
