In this article I want to speak plainly. Some will, no doubt, say I have spoken bluntly. Some might well say I have spoken far too bluntly, even cruelly, callously – hitting people when they are down, attacking them when they are at their most vulnerable, snatching away their innocent morsels of comfort. I disagree. I am not being unfeeling. I am not being heartless. Indeed, it is the love of souls which stirs me. Nor is what I write against ‘innocent’ or ‘harmless’. Far from it. So, while I want to speak the truth in love, I do want to speak the truth, however painful that may be. The issue I am dealing with demands absolute clarity. No fudging will suffice. Lies offer only false comfort. Nothing but the truth will do. As the Lord Jesus Christ himself announced: The truth will set you free... If the Son [of God] sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:32,36). |
