1 Timothy is a letter that explains how the Household of God is to operate, see 1 Timothy 3:15.
If last week's sermon on women's roles was a difficult sermon, this sermon is even more difficult. Paul begins chapter 3 by saying, "This saying is trustworthy." This is Paul's code for saying, "Pay close attention because to what follows because the livelihood of the church is at stake."
How is the church at stake? If the elders do not fulfill thier roles, they will lead the church down the dangerous wide, and crooked path.
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd - John 10- and leads His sheep on the straight and narrow path, the path of grace. And what Christ does perfectly, the elders do partially.
We see this is 3 ways.
1) In the desires of Elders (1) We see how we are to die to self and live to Christ in faith.
2) In the character of Elders (2-3) We see how we are to pursue holiness, by faith and repentance.
3) In the experience of Elders (4-7) We see how we are to discover the grace of God in every area of our lives: in our family, in our church, in our work.
