Businesses make all kinds of claims as to the benefit of their product or the greatness of their service. But how do they substantiate those claims? How do we know if they are telling to truth? Many times they turn to satisfied customers, people who have used their product or services, to tell their stories. For advertisers know the power of a personal story to substantiate claims! In Galatians, Paul is under attack from false teachers who were discrediting his call as an apostle and the message he was preaching. Paul claims that he was appointed an apostle directly by Jesus Christ and that he received his message from Christ as well. But how does Paul prove that he is an independent contractor, beholden to no one including the original apostles in Jerusalem? He does so by relating his story, particularly noting the facts surrounding his conversion and subsequent interaction with the original twelve. He notes that there was nothing in his Jewish upbringing which would account for him becoming an apostle of Jesus Christ with a message of salvation by God's grace through faith plus no human works. In fact, just the opposite for his upbringing prepared him to be the chief legalist, not a proponent of grace. But what does account for his apostleship and message is that Paul had a personal, life-transforming encounter with the living Christ! The God who set him apart from birth called him by grace to reveal Jesus Christ in Paul and to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. His call, conversion, and commission was all due to the grace of God! And so, the same is true of us who are trusting Jesus Christ alone for our salvation! It's all by the grace of God !
