Liberty of Conscience #3 (Gal 4:1-11;4:31-5:2) Intro: Historical setting Contest of liberty of conscience vs tyranny of king. See Lk 1:68-75
1. Limitation of authority in imposing doctrines & commandments in faith & worship 'Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men'' (Mk 7:5-7). Even innocuous ceremonies are condemned by severe rebukes. This is called 'will-worship' or 'self-imposed' religion in Col 2:20-22. See Dt 4:2,12:32; Rom 14:4,14:23
WCF 20.2: God alone is Lord of the conscience, & hath left it free from the doctrines & commandments of men, which are, in anything, contrary to his Word; or beside it, if matters of faith, or worship. So that, to believe such doctrines, or to obey such commands, out of conscience, is to betray true liberty of conscience: & the requiring of an implicit faith, & an absolute & blind obedience, is to destroy liberty of conscience, & reason also. http://www.arpsynod.org/conf_xx.html
2. Limitation of submission in believing doctrines & obeying commandments of men 'You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men' (1Cor 7:23) a.Hand Washing (Mk 7:1-7) b.Circumcision (Gal 5:1-2,13 vs Acts 16:3) c.Holy Days (Gal 4:9-11, Col 2:16 vs. Acts 20:16) d.Jeroboam's Reforms (1Ki 12:32-33;14:16)
