The Kingdom of God invaded the pagan culture of the Greco-Roman world of Paul’s day. The gospel powerfully challenged the Roman province of Asia Minor from the great city of Ephesus. Luke tells us that the Word of God was proclaimed in all of Asia and prevailed (Acts 19:20). The reaction came from two fronts, religion and economy. Judaism felt the power of Christ. Paganism with its dark arts and demon power was shaken violently by the light of the truth.
In the passage before us, Demetrius, head of the guild of silver smiths that crafted images and shrines for the goddess Artimas felt the pain in their pockets. The gospel was threatening their living by threatening the worship of their patron deity.
Fallen humans react to such threats by mindlessly rioting and raging. Luke recounts how God’s servants are threatened and protected.
