Kingdom Words and Workers (Col 4:2-18) Intro: Review We've got to learn the 'big things,' Col 1:9-12. And we've got to seek and find complete life transformation, for that is the proper expectation.
Exposition: Kingdom Words 'He sent his word and healed them' (Ps 107:20, see 130:5)
1. Prayer for Grace: Speaking to God about Men (4:2-4) General command: continue earnestly in prayer Specific command: pray that we might speak as we ought
Our prayer is God's delight (see Pr 15:8, Is 65:24, Is 62:6-7, Ex 17) a. For God to open a door for the word b. For God to give him grace to speak as he ought to speak
2. Words for Grace: Speaking to Men about God (4:5-6) General command: walk in wisdom toward outsiders; redeem the time Specific command: you are always to speak as you ought
a. Make profitable use of your time b. Make gracious use of your words
For meaning of 'salt' and 'grace' compare Eph 4:29, 'Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.'
3. Kingdom Workers: Learning about the Men of God (4:7-18) - Compare descriptions of the two men returning, Tychicus and Onesimus (see Col 3:11) - Compare description of the three Jewish workers with the Gentiles - Compare the prayer of Epaphras with Col 1:9-12 - Compare Luke and Demas with 2Tim 4:10-11; etc.
