It is has been nearly 2000 years since our Lord ascended into glory. For nearly 2000 years we have waited for the victorious return of Jesus Christ. We are to wait not seeking to predict but in expectation. The call is always to be ready. Peter in 2 Peter 3 wrote about those who were denying the return of Christ. It should have happened already. Part of Peter’s correction to this false teaching is the truth that God does not count time like man does.
The Lord is longsuffering giving opportunity for repentance and the fulfillment of all His promises. What is the connection of this theme of perseverance and our text from Acts 3? The connection probably doesn’t jump out at you. The connection comes from Isaiah 35, which we read earlier. Isaiah 35:3 which is quoted also in Hebrews 12:12 speaks of strengthening weak hands and making firm the feeble knees. Isaiah 35:6 then speaks of the lame leaping like a deer. We don’t live in the same age of dramatic miracles done through the hands of the apostles. But this does not mean the work of Jesus Christ is finished or diminished. The greater miracle of the salvation of lost and ruined sinners continues. And God also gives strength to His pilgrim people as they walk along His highways, the Way of Holiness. The Lord Jesus Christ is still at work today! Let us labor with perseverance and compassion for the lost. We will look at Acts 3 in two parts – the miracle and Peter’s sermon before considering some other points of application.
