In one of his lectures on Reformation church history, Carl Trueman said that 1909 is the most important date in church history. You say 1909? He wasn’t being entirely serious, but 1909, actually late 1908 was when Henry Ford started to produce the Model T, considered the first, affordable automobile. In the 20th century, the car significantly transformed how local churches operate. In some cases, it makes church discipline very difficult. If you come under church discipline, you can easily just drive to another church. For most of church history also, people were part of a church somewhat close to their home. Cars and in some cases public transportation changed this for the most part. This is not all negative. It is not that we try to get back to the good old days before 1909. But we must consider the changes and the impact of those changes in the light of Scripture. The passage we consider from Acts 2:42-47 sets before us an example of the early church. We are not meant to try to duplicate every detail. There is no temple any longer. However, this text is rightfully understood as presenting essential actions and attitudes we must practice as a local church. We must seek to worship, give sacrificially, and as much as possible live life together as God’s people as we recognize we live only by God’s grace and provision. Our focus will be on Acts 2:42-47 in two parts. First, I want to us to consider how the early church worshipped and lived. Second, we must consider how God sustained the early church.
