As the good shepherd, Jesus is utterly unlike the thief or the hireling. Here we have a window into his heart and mind. He affirms his voluntary sacrifice: no-one takes his life from him, he lays it down of himself. Secondly, he has absolute authority: he is free both to lay down his life and take it up again. What power and wisdom belong to Christ! It should inspire confidence and joy in him. Thirdly, we trace his complete obedience to his Father as he comes to die and rise from the dead.
As we contemplate the Father's initiative in our salvation and the Son's authority and obedience we must ask, is our joy full to the brim and overflowing? To know the Father and the one whom he has sent is eternal life.
