The Futility of Athletic Prestige It is worth noting Luke 16:1-31, Matthew 16:24-28, Mark 8:34-38, Luke 9:23-27, and 1 John 2:15-17 in response to this futile pursuit which is known as athletic prestige. A sermon like this shows that pro sports is of the world, thus representing the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Also, The Book of Ecclesiastes written by King Solomon also shows the futility of the temporal worldly life compared to The Free Gift of Eternal Salvation offered by Faith in Jesus Christ.

Sports Venues: Dens of Thieves It is worth noting the example of Jesus Cleansing The Temple in Matthew 21:12–17, Mark 11:15–19, Luke 19:45–48, and John 2:13-16. It is also worth remembering Psalm 69:9 and Isaiah 56:7 as well. This is because sports venues are actual dens of thieves. Sadly, contemporary churches, with their use of sports, are also dens of thieves. This sermon shows why we should not turn Abba Father's House into a house of merchandise, or rather, a den of thieves.

Pro Athletes: Antichrists It is worth noting the example in Samuel 17:1-58 in response to this craze over worldly athletic championship. In The Bible, particularly The King James Bible, the word 'champion' occurs 3 times in 3 verses, particularly in 1 Samuel 17:4, 1 Samuel 17:23, and 1 Samuel 17:51. The 'champion' is referring to Goliath, who is also a picture of the antichrist. Just as Goliath was referred to as a champion, so these antichrist pro athletes are also worldly champions. One notable celebration of antichrist are both the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. This sermon shows that the spirit of antichrist indwells the pro athletes and that pro athletes are symbols of antichrist. A sermon like this also shows that the desire for athletic prestige, which is of the world, is also of the antichrist. Pro sports is indeed an abomination in The Sight of The Lord because it is highly esteemed among the masses of people.

John The Baptist: Beheaded for Opposing Adultery As noted in Matthew 14:1-12, Mark 6:14-29, and Luke 9:7-9, John the Baptist was beheaded for opposing the adultery committed by Herod Antipas. It is also because John the Baptist referenced The Law of Moses, particularly Leviticus 18:16 and Leviticus 20:21. As John The Baptist opposed the fornication of Herod Antipas, so we also must oppose this sinful fornication which is called pro sports.

The Sin of Covetousness As Outlined In The Bible The word 'covetousness' is found in The Bible, particularly Exodus 18:21, Psalm 119:36, Proverbs 28:16, Isaiah 57:17, Jeremiah 6:13, Jeremiah 8:10, Jeremiah 22:17, Jeremiah 51:13, Ezeziel 33:31, Habakkuk 2:9, Mark 7:22, Luke 12:15, Romans 1:29, 2 Corinthians 9:5, Ephesians 5:3, Colossians 3:5, 1 Thessalonians 2:5, Hebrews 13:5, and 2 Peter 2:3. The word 'covetousness' is translated from the Hebrew word betsa` (בֶּצַע) and the Greek word pleonexia (πλεονεξία). A sermon like this is a response to this wicked sin of covetousness called pro sports. If we wish to take heed and beware of covetousness as Jesus commanded us to do in Luke 12:15, it means that we must shun pro sports.

Outstanding Message This is an outstanding message from Pastor Cooley. Idolatry is rampant in the western world...especially 'sports idolatry'. It's utter blasphemy and wickedness. The western world has long 'begged' the wrath of our Holy God, and it appears to be rightfully forthcoming.

Unpopular Preaching Against Popular Idolatry This sermon, as shown in the title called The History of Sports Idolatry, has unpopular preaching against this popular idolatry called pro sports. Sadly, the popular idolatry of pro sports is now in churches today. Biblical Truth has never been popular with the masses since it confronts the issue of human sin and Righteous Judgment. Of course, pro sports is a temporal worldly vanity which will vanish away. This sermon clearly explains why The Lord strongly condemns all forms of idolatry, including sports idolatry.

Ole Miss Rebels: Satanic Team Name Tragically, the NCAA (Nonsensical Collegiate Athletics Association) has a team called the Ole Miss Rebels. For a sports team to be called the rebels only shows that Satan has gotten a hold on pro sports. As we know from The Bible, Satan was the first rebel. Fortunately, such rebellion will be permanently vanquished by Abba Father, Jesus The Son, and The Holy Spirit. This sermon shows that The Lord hates all rebellion against His Righteous Rule, even if there is a sports team name called the rebels.

Pro Sports: The Circus of Society As this sermon demonstrates, pro sports is the circus of society, which entertains people with sideshow acts. These sideshow acts include many of the major events at the Olympics today like the gymnastics and the aquatics. It should also be noted that pro sports is a distraction which Satan uses to amuse people to the point of not thinking on eternity. Sadly, many churches have adopted the worldly circus known as pro sports. This only shows that the love of the world is what is present in most churches today. Sports fans have idols in their hearts and pro sports is that very idol of their hearts. The Christian life, as demonstrated in Biblical passages like 2 Timothy 2:3 and Jude 1:3, is a spiritual battle against the wiles of the Devil, namely his rebellion against The Lord. The Christian life is not about being entertained by the silly antics of the world. It is about fighting the good fight against the Devil until the battle is over. Very helpful sermon in response to this craze over pro sports. It is also worth noting the example of idols of the heart in Ezekiel 14:1-23.

Pro Sports: Potential Connection to Witchcraft It should also be noted that pro sports has a potential connection to witchcraft. In ancient times, spells were cast during ancient sporting events. As we know, casting spells is associated with the evils of witchcraft. It would be no surprise if pro athletes from ancient times to modern times cast spells as a means of amplifying their performance in athletic events. This sermon shows why Satan exploits pro sports with the intent on distracting the masses, even if pro sports involves witchcraft, which is of Satanic and demonic origin.

Pro Sports: An Attack on Righteousness This hard hitting sermon clearly explains why pro sports is an attack on righteousness. It is worth noting Proverbs 14:34 in a world which exalts pro sports.

Pro Sports: Wearing Undergarments Out In The Open It is also worth noting that pro athletes wear their undergarments out in the open where they can be seen by people around them. This includes the immodest bikinis and thigh bearing leotards worn by female Olympic athletes in the aquatic sports, beach volleyball, gymnastics, and track and field. As for the skintight race suits worn by Winter Olympic athletes in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, long track speed skating, luge, skeleton, and short track speed skating, they also are considered long undergarments, also known as long johns. This sermon really outlined how pro sports promotes dressing in a sexual manner in the most blatant way possible with its bikinis, briefs, leotards, race suits, unitards, and other immodest and skintight apparel.

Pro Sports: Instrument of Paganism There is also historical evidence that pro sports in ancient times was mostly practiced by pagans. This was evident in the Ancient Greek Olympics. This also shows that post-ancient pro sports has only inherited the pagan religious legacy of ancient pro sports practiced by pagans.

Women's Pro Sports: Pornography in Plain Sight It is rather accurate to refer to women's pro sports as pornography in plain sight due to many female athletes, like those in the Olympics, as being half naked as they wear immodest apparel like thigh-bearing leotards and bikinis. Even secular publishers have criticized women's pro sports as well as pro sports in general for its blatant disregard for modesty and modest apparel. Worth remembering 1 Timothy 2:9 in times like these. Of course, it's not just pro sports that is showing disregard for modesty. The blatant disregard for modesty is evident in most evangelical churches today as well with contemporary praise music.

Pro Athletes: Rich and Spoiled Pro athletes are indeed rich and spoiled. Never forget the Parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. As evident in the parable, the fate of the rich man was that he was tormented in Hell for the rest of eternity. The fact is, that many wealthy people, including the pro athletes, will meet the same fate that the rich man met. They will be suffering eternal punishment in Hell.

Pro Sports: Gaining The Whole World This sermon really nails not just the idolatry of pro sports, but the worldiness of it. It is worth remembering Matthew 16:24-28 and Mark 8:34-38 in regards to pro sports. What shall it profit anyone if they gain the whole world and lose their own souls? Pro sports really is about gaining the whole world. These prestigious, but spoiled, pro athletes think that they will gain the whole, but in reality, most of them will lose their own souls in Hell, and eventually, the Lake of Fire. It is also worth noting 1 John 2:15-17 as well. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, which are not of The Father, but are of the world. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life are all manifested in pro sports, meaning that pro sports is not of The Father, but is of the world.

The Idolatry of Sports Defeated by One Sermon It is rather disastrous that pro athletes and sports are idolized by many people. Of course, we know that pro athletes are involved in many sins, including fornication and narcotic usage since pro athletes are obviously spoiled rotten by society at large and the athletic organizations sponsoring them.
Pro sports produces so many idols, namely idols in the form of sports teams, memorabilia, professional athletes, awards, and so forth. Not to mention that sports is a favorite idol in today's evangelical churches. This idol called pro sports not only destroys the moral integrity of society. It produces a generation of people indifferent to what is really happening around them.
Pro sports is just pro covetousness, which is idolatry indeed.

Great Sermon! These kind of pull no punches, sacred cow smashing, sobering sermons causing conviction and demanding repentance are much needed in the apostate, worldly churches of America today. May the Lord continue to strengthen you to expose and demolish idols. God bless you and your ministry.

Disclaimer Needed Brother Cooley's sermon requires a disclaimer for "macho" men who aren't intimidated by the truth. It really should not fall on "pharisee" hunter's ears who like to pervert the Scripture which states that we have liberty in all things. Maybe those who misuse the word "pharisee" might like to consider that liberty in Christ would, obviously, not include liberty to sin; things like pornography (by the standard of the Bible),idolatry, and gratuitous violence.
Thank you Jason Cooley for an excellent sermon covering a most avoided topic.
And, of course, the best one to preach on such is usually one who has come out of the same deception.
Great Sermon! Not many a Christian will want to hear this.
Sports and X-Mass seem to be the golden calves (idols) that they will not let go of.
Brother Cooley, you have taken on a subject that nearly all pulpits in this country are stone cold silent on.
Thank-you for being faithful to your Lord and Saviour.
Praying for you and your flock.
