Jesus promised that his disciples would suffer tribulation, but also that they would find abiding peace in him who has overcome the world (John 16:33). Elsewhere Sibbes has said, "As the winter prepares the earth for spring, so also do sanctified afflictions prepare the soul for glory." Richard Sibbes was a humble man who lived his life in moderation. He had a peaceful spirit and was universally well-liked. As he adorned the gospel alluringly in his ministry, so he was a popular preacher. He held a lectureship at Holy Trinity, Cambridge; preached at Gray's Inn, London; and was Master of St. Catherine's Hall, Cambridge.
