We have been talking about God's grace in this series. Today we talk about how we are to "receive" this grace. Grace is God's unmerited and undeserved favor. There is a way he conveys His gracious influence, His strengthening grace, sustaining grace, His gracious presence, etc. Historically, our protestant forefathers called it "MEANS OF GRACE" — by which, these "DUTIES" were called means of grace, the means, the conduit, the channel, the vehicle, the means by which our gracious Lord conveys His blessings, His grace, His strength, His comfort, His nourishment, His peace, His joy, etc.
Viewing these things as "means of grace" is far better than seeing them as mere duties.
I. God's Word can be the means of our SALVATION (v. 15). II. God's Word can be the means of our SANCTIFICATION. III. God's Word MUST be the means of our LIFE AND NOURISHMENT (Mt. 4:4). IV. III. God's Word can be the means of our ENCOURAGEMENT (Rom. 15:4).
