Sovereign Grace and Evangelism #2 (Jn 6:27-40) Intro: Wesley vs. Whitefield 'I must preach the gospel of Christ, and that I cannot now do, without speaking of election.' [see http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/wesley.htm]
Review: Sovereign Grace and Evangelism? 1. A hindrance? Definitely not. 2. An encouragement? Definitely. But we must go further. 3. A tool! Used in evangelism for the conversion of sinners. Ex: Jn 3:1-6, total inability and irresistible grace
Exposition: A frequent combination! 1. This is once again an evangelistic message. See v.33ff, 52ff, etc.
2. Jesus is once again using the twin doctrines of total depravity and irresistible grace in his evangelistic message. See v.27, 42ff, 63ff.
3. Compare to Jn 8:42-47 (also total depravity and irresistible grace)
4. Compare to Jn 10:9-11, 14-16, 24-30 (limited atonement and perseverance of the saints)
Doctrine 1. The doctrines of grace are preached by our Lord in his evangelistic messages. 2. These evangelistic messages are effective in saving some of his hearers. See also Jn 10:41-42. 3. These hearers are saved because they are strongly confronted with their own inability to save themselves and the ability of a sovereign God to save them to the uttermost.
Conclusion Whitefield's preaching of the doctrines of grace in the Great Revival.
