The Bible speaks about physical punishment. I didn't says it's a figurative rod, but there's a biblical principle behind the commandment. The Bible doesn't say "don't smoke" yet we don't do it because of the biblical principle of taking care of the Temple of the Holy Spirit and because we have to stay away of all kind of bad things, smoking included (1 Th 5:22) So the rod is literal, but spanking is also biblical and good.
