Absolutely! Every moment of every day.

That's why we need the "sword of the spirit, the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation. . "

"fighting against principalities and powers . ."

"Setting our minds on things above, not on the things of earth."

As to God being pleased with a man before he believes . . .

The question may be asked: Does God only operate in the life of a person WHEN he/she believes? Or, does He "grace" the life of the person from conception?

IOW, is not everything that providentially occurs in the life of person who comes to faith operative towards that end - his salvation?

Take Jacob, for example. We have the account of his life detailed. Was God "absent" until Jacob "wrestled with God?" Or, was everything ordered to bring about the intended result - his redemption? And, more importantly, the lineage of Christ.

Roman Catholics and moslems "worship the same god" according to your pope
I cringe when I remember saying that to a muslim who was delivering a rug to my house. That was 20 years ago, and I didn't know much about Islam, and the comment was made as a connecting point. Thankfully, I gave the man both a Bible and C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." Still, the statement that I made about worshipping the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob being the same as this man's god, causes me grief.

Roger wrote, "Why does man always try to impute some type of enabled righteousness into the nature of man?"

Roger, You can't make man a passive person in the relationship. There are sooooo many directives to live not after the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Why give those, if there is nothing that man can do?

1 Peter 4:17 says, "For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome of those who do not ***OBEY*** the gospel of God?"

Why do you suppose that verse would state that if there is not an expectation on the part of man by God?

___________

John UK,

Thanks for adding that post about the transformation of the apostles/disciples after the coming of the Holy Spirit. They were now indwelt and empowered to be used by God for His purposes. Good post in finishing mine.

Roger,

I think the response of the disciples was one of the brokenhearted who knows that hope is only to be found in Christ. So, the intonation would have been one of submission combined with desperation at the thought of going elsewhere.

As to Peter's arrogance - he would have to learn submission by the things which he would suffer. There is still so much of "us" at conversion, and death to self isn't immediate. John the baptist said, "HE must increase, and I must increase." That takes time.

By the time Peter died, he was a changed man. Read 1st and 2nd Peter. The man was changed and asked to be crucified upside down because he was not worthy to be crucified as was his LORD.

Yes, DJC49, suffering is essential in our walk on earth. It is preparation for eternity. God's Glory is manifest in our weakness, and we come to know our weaknesses, our absolute inability to contribute anything to our salvation, as we trust in the Lord to see us through our trials and tribulations. "All who desire to live godly will suffer persecution." "Man is born for trouble, as the sparks fly upward."

There are those today who "follow" Jesus for reasons other than a love for the person of Christ.

When Jesus was becoming more a divisive figure in Jerusalem and the surrounding area, those who followed for the fish and bread, signs and miracles, fell away.

Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "Will you leave also?" to which the response was, "Lord where would we go?" "You have the keys to eternal life."

That must be the cry of the heart. "Lord I will go with you wherever you go, regardless of the persecution." "I would even go to hell if you were there."

It is the love of the Lord Jesus Christ, that is needed. Sadly, most people just want assurance that they are not going to hell when they die - fire protection. Or, they want an "out" to their difficult circumstances. They want the byproducts of a relationship with him, peace, joy, etc., but they do not want HIM. HE is the pearl of great price. He is the Bread of Life. He is Eternal Life. The JOY is in knowing HIM.

SIN plays a major part in the life of the sinner. It is YOU guys who don't include sin in the process.
The real central character here is man and his pride, covetousness, greed and his attachment to them - to the exclusion of God.
I think you hit the nail on the head. Apart from the conviction of sin, one cannot be saved. Jesus came to saved "sinners" - and, this man never recognized his sin. In fact, he thought that he was "pretty good". Of course, it is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict of sin, and that conviction just wasn't there.

Conviction of sin is a blessing. As Christians, it keeps us at the foot of the cross, recognizing our need for a Saviour, always confessing.

I know that there are many people who can sin without any conviction. They can even partake of the Lord's supper without any qualms over a sinful lifestyle. That's sobering.

The battle against sexual impurity is fought and won or lost in the mind.

"Taking EVERY thought captive unto Christ. . ."

It is a discipline that must be practiced throughout life.

Closer to home, many contemporaries have a notion that God is nothing but an old benevolent uncle up in the sky -- a Santa Claus type. He loves everybody (except for REALLY bad people like Hitler and ax murderers) and He's totally approachable WITHOUT a mediator.
So it's extremely necessary as a foundation to the Gospel that the true nature of God be laid out. And it's EXACTLY what Paul did in his epistle to the Romans ... in his discourse, he started with GOD.
We agree. "How good it is for brothers [and sisters] to dwell together in unity."

Well said.

Seriously WHY? would teaching in who God IS be needed?
I don't want to be collateral damage in the current battle between you and DJC49, but I will respond to your question directed at me.

People, today, do not know the God of the Bible, so they have one that they have amalgamated to suit their wants and desires.

I'm reminded of Paul on Mars Hill declaring the "Unknown God" to a people thoroughly religious with their many gods.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob is not known. The God of Moses and His power in delivering the people out of Egypt is not known. The God of Joshua, Elijah, David is not known. You get the picture. And, the Jesus that the pastors of "love" and "acceptance" speak of is not the Jesus presented to us in Scripture.

So, what I am saying is that people need to know WHO GOD IS, before they can understand WHO THEY ARE. If we are made in God's Image, we need to know what that image is and then how far short we fall. Sin means nothing unless it is presented against the backdrop of God's HOLINESS. Wisdom starts with a fear of the Lord. We need to understand what that means. Remember, those who encountered the Living God fell on their knees, trembling. We need that kind of fear.

The problem with the Southern Baptists is their hangup on numbers, then their boasting of the increase. The evangelistic style of the SBC adds numbers...to the broad road. They encourage the lost sinner to 'invite Jesus into their heart', or 'make a decision', 'pray a prayer', 'choose Jesus'. None of this is biblical! The method of salvation SBC style is just as deadly as anything taught by the RCC, or radical Islam.
The Lord Jesus Christ adds to His church, not based on 'mans' decision' to accept Him, but based on God's grace.
There is no earthly denomination that can claim to be His church, the true church is made up of called out ones from all walks of life, spread out all over the globe. True church planting is done when the true Gospel is preached, and the lost sinner is broken over his/her sins.
Accurate description - and, don't forget the "fashion show".

But seriously - There needs to be teaching on "WHO" God IS. Teaching on the attributes of God would be preliminary work in tilling the soil of the heart of the lost. And, since the churches are full of the lost, what an opportunity! This would be antithetical to the man-centered teaching that is prevalent today.

Just throwing a comment out there - no need to respond, as your comment was directed to another.

Salvation is all of God, but man is not passive in the process. There is a response on the part of the human being - albeit, divinely wrought.

I think the biggest issue in the church is that it is FULL of UNBELIEVERS!

You want scripture .. try Deut 32.37, Psalm 20.27.
Out of space.......
Or, like Joe Biden telling the man in the wheelchair to stand up and take a bow? - Not pertinent to discussion, but similarly funny in odd sorta way.

Actually, I wanted to call your attention to Psalm 20 - it only has 9 verses. Did you mean Psalm 22:27?

These guys have real problems, because their systematic theologians do their thinking for them. They then use that as a grid to interpret scripture.
Faith per se must always be a gift, and if you cannot fall in with this then you are guilty of works righteousness. How so? Can they prove that faith is ever a work? No! But their systematic workbooks tell them that it must be so! And so they flock to SA to teach us all the true religion!
Likewise they talk about "dead in sins and tresspasses", and more often than not they mean there can be no relation to spiritual things, because the sinner is like a corpse. The problem is of course that the picture is very imperfect, because whilst it is true that there can be no movement towards spiritual good, there is plenty of movement aganist it. As you rightly point out, if a sinner is a corpse then there should no movement at all- not for and not against.
Ho Hum..!
Excellent post! Well said!

Question do you want to be like the FIRST Adam or the SECOND Adam?

I gotta run also, but - and, I'm not quibbling - what is the distinction between the first man Adam and the second Adam if it is not perfection with eternal life. Jesus was perfect as a Man. He didn't need to die to be perfect. He died so that we too could be made like Him. But, He was already perfect before He died. So, it would seem that the distinction is that the first Adam and the seed for all mankind was in Adam - "if a grain of seed fall into the ground and dies, it brings forth much fruit" - the fall was necessary to bring forth the fruit unto salvation - eternal life. The curse was a part of the plan, and the perfection would be in the perfect man/God Jesus Christ that He may bring forth the fruit that He determined. I'm just thinkin

Oh, John living in UK,

Thanks for answering a previous post in regards to the resurrection of the body. 1 Cor. 15 was what you used to address what Scripture says of the resurrection of the body being sown a natural body and raised a spiritual body. I began to think more on this when a fellow member of a PCA church said that we would have these bodies that we now have only perfected. That disturbed my thinking. I mean, after all, who doesn't want a new body?

When we see the resurrected Jesus in Scripture, we know that He still has the marks of his crucifixion. We know that He prepares food for the disciples. We know that He appeared suddenly behind closed walls. So, there is a difference, but there is a relationship to the old.

Just a thought: Since man was created perfect in the Garden, wouldn't God in restoration bring man back to that place of perfection - only, this time to live in an eternal state of perfection? The new heaven and new earth will be without the effects of the curse?

John Y, Just a quick question. Why do you think Jesus got baptisted by John the Baptist. And, why did God in Heaven decide at that very moment in time to recognize His Son on earth. Anyone please feel free to give me their answer. Thanks.
Just a guess - but, would it be the transferring of the old Levitical priesthood to the new? The old priesthood being through the tribe of Levi, and now the new being through the tribe of Judah - as was prophesied of the Messiah? Like in the O.T. the passing of the mantle of Elijah to Elisha, or Moses to Joshua.

Yes, I was convinced of the "narrow way that leads to life, and few there be who find it." "Many are called, but few are chosen." - But, Spurgeon said something in one of his messages that made me think differently - that greater is the work of God in salvation (in terms of numbers) than the work of Satan and the eternally lost. This is a very loose translation, but, that was the impression that he left - and, it makes sense. God is redeeming a vast number of people to populate His Heaven and His earth - from every tribe, and tongue, and nation, and people. How could we think that only a "few" would be in heaven? God is Magnanimous!!! It is something to think about.
