When it says that Saul tried to "join" the disciples at Jerusalem, I think that it is pretty evident that it more than just "hanging out" with them. He greatly desired to become a member of the church there. The fact that Saul was looking for something more formal in regard to church membership is indicated by the fact that the disciples were afraid of his being allowed to become a member of the church there with them. And that it took Barnabas bringing him to the apostles and declaring unto them Paul's conversion experience and that the Lord had personally spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. And thereby, he was admitted to their membership formally. He was with them coming in and going out of their stated meetings.
