FreewillerCan you by free will make yourself a new heart and a new spirit as God commands in Ezekiel 18:31 which Finney believed he could do and taught to his followers? If so, God says later in (Eze 36:26) A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. Can you by free will keep all of the law (ten commandments) perfectly in thought, word and deed? If so, God says in (Rom 8:7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed CAN BE. Can you by freewill repent as God commands in Acts 17:30? If so, God says in (2Ti 2:25) In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; God does command us to do what we cannot do! |

Yamil "Yes. And it also does not state that only an arbitrary few will come"Only the Lord knows how many He will save but I can know from reading Revelations that it will be a multitude that no man can number. Rev 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; Rev 7:10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. |

Dwayne “Comparing the works of the law (circumcision, ritual washings, priestly sacrifices, sabbath-keeping, etc.) with the COMMANDMENTS of Christ (Sermon on the Mount, self-renuncition, defenselessness, pacifism, works of mercy, charity, forgiveness, perserverence, etc. is quite disingenuous.”In comparing the works of the law you left out the moral law (ten commandments) which I believe this verse (Gal 2:16) is talking about as for the commandments of Christ these fruits you mentioned are of the Holy Spirit which work in the believer to do by His power. It is only those that are saved by Christ that will show forth the fruit of the Spirit and will walk after the Spirit. We don’t do the commandments of Christ to be saved but do them because we are saved by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom 8:4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Rom 8:7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, ***neither indeed can be.*** |

Freewiller “And worse, if they believe they are helpless to control their own behavior, not even responsible for anything they do or don't do?”The Lord’s people will with the help of the Holy Spirit mortify the deeds of the flesh as they hate sin but those who only make a profession of faith and still live after the flesh are not God’s people. (Rom 8:13) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Rom 8:14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. |
