In other words, Mr J supports the singing of any Psalms, Hymns or Spiritual songs, in the following context:

1. It is God-centred and reverent.
2. It is holy; ie clearly separate from the world.
3. Words are scriptural, either by being taken directly from scripture, or by stating acceptable doctrines based on sound theology
4. Music is of high quality
5. Words are to avoid vain repetitions

I don't disagree with these principles. I get frustrated by "baby with bathwater" attitudes when people become disillusioned when these principles aren't followed, and retreat to "Psalms-only" mentality.

The Lord did not invent contraception, man did, to increase the service of the god of mammon. It is a chemical "decision" destroying motherhood and family.
Walking is also the gift of God. Nor did the Lord invest cars, but man did. I don't think that's a strong contracontraception argument.

I feel it would be valuable to set out JDs theology on this issue in a series of points. These are my words, and I ask JD to confirm them or edit them:
1. Any man, at all times in history, is spritually dead without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit; such that God becomes a part of him, and a part of his nature.
2. The Holy Spirit could not indwell any man in history after the sin of Adam, and before the death and resurrection of Christ; though he did not in fact indwell any man until Pentecost.
3. OT believers were justified by God the Father because of their faith.
4. OT believers remained spiritually dead however; ie: not regenerated; and were not redeemed from their sins.
4. OT believers were redeemed by Christ at the resurrection.
5. OT believers were regenerated by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
6. Already justified; once redeemed and then regenerated, OT believers went into the presence of God.

I think it would be very valuable for JD to clarify these points before we move on. I hope that this will stop the circular arguments, and ease the frustration.

Discerning Believer wrote:
Bernard, can you provide a scriptural basis for making the sign of the cross when praying.
There is certainly no scriptural basis for making the sign of the cross. My point however, is that there is no scriptural basis for many of the things done in most churches today. Many and most are broad words, I know. While 'not in scripture' is a good starting point for arguing against the 'sign of the cross', I think that a more thorough treatment would include how it goes against what is in scripture.

Of all the non-scriptural rituals, traditions, objects, etc in the Roman church, I think that making the sign of the cross is really quite low on the list of protestant concerns. This is supported by Luther, if he indeed didn't protest against it.

Ga 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
This is a fantastic text, showing how the blessing of Abraham is also available to us Gentiles, that we might also receive the same promise of the Spirit; also through faith.

If it is not commanded in scripture, it is forbidden, it is unscriptural.
This is a very narrow yardstick. I would be amazed if there was ANY congregation that today did ONLY what is COMMANDED in scripture. Feel free to submit a liturgy for scriptural review...

By sin, not decree.
In fact, by sin AND decree. Why do we want to argue whether it is one or the other?

Yes, "vessels of wrath are those fitted to destruction by their own unbelief and rebellion"! But look at Discerning Believer's post for the Roman's passage: It is by God's sovereign will and decree.

What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means!

I've concluded that some people choose to substitute a "_" in place of an "o". That is, write "G_d" or "L_rd", instead of "God" or "Lord".

One possible explanation is faulty keyboards. It would seem more sensible however, to use a zero ("0") in place of an "o". That is, write "G0d" or "L0rd". Or even use the smilies available, like: L rd. Problem is, these people tend to use "o's" in other places, ruling this out.

I'm sure it's not important, but I am very curi_us.

May I suggest that there is an apparent contradiciton between the two sentences I've quoted? Christ is not reigning on an earthly throne, but will come to be physical king on the earth?

If "God is in control", must he choose only unbelievers to run the world?

...Here is what it does say:
1Jo 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.
1Ti 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
Ro 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
In case you do not know who the ungodly are, they are the saved people prior to their believing.
Ro 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Anyone who has no understanding of the formation of the church being formed from the believers from both gentiles and Jews by the Spirit as the unique family of God in this age is likely to be advance arguments from an ignorance of the church like some folks here have done. Amen
So the OT saints are not included in "the whole world", or "all men", "the ungodly" (prior to their believing)?

Did not Abraham believe on him that justified the ungodly? Was not his faith counted for righteousness?

Amen! It was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you, Icon bar-Jonah.

Dr. Phil wrote:
As many do (even some Protestants) you have deluded yourself into thinking you are a Christian.
I think you should be careful Dr Phil not to delude yourself into thinking that you can judge if someone is a Christian - over a forum, no less. (cf Matthew 7:1, Romans 14:4)

To be saved, you must believe. (cf Romans 10:9, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:21, Acts 16:31).

God, in his infinite mercy and omnipitent power, may choose to save some who attend a Roman Catholic Church.

That said. John, could there come a point when the number of unsriptural doctrines and unsriptural parts of the mass dispensed with turn you into a stranger in a strange land? You may one day find yourself more at home in a protestant church.

I urge you to think over what your motives are for going, and what they are for staying; and how valid the two lists are.

Mr. J wrote:
...Now churches are fighting to give them rights in the pulpit. They should not be members of the church, let alone in positions of leadership...
I think it's important to note that while this is a valid statement for unrepentent homosexuals only. Homosexuals should be welcomed into churches so that they can hear the gospel clearly preached.

If a homosexual repents of his/her sin and confesses Christ as Lord, then the normal processes of church membership, etc, should apply. Remember, the Corinthian church included ex-homosexuals ("...what some of you were...").

All of this applies equally of course to anyone leading a lifestyle of sin and rebellion against God.

...Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the KINGDOM OF GOD.
The Spirit was not given until Acts 2.
Lu 7:28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. ...
Why doesn't Christ say, "...but he that WILL BE LEAST in the kingdom of God WILL BE greater than he..."? The plain reading of this text says:
1. The kingdom of God exists
2. It has people in it
3. The least-most person in the kingdom is greater than John the Baptist

"And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:43)

How was the thief on the cross saved? By faith? Was he regenerated? Did the Holy Spirit dwell in him? Was he an OT believer or a NT believer?

Icon, please meditate on the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:24-26)

Paul wrote:
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Icon: You are also right - mostly.

On further reflection, I see that this is an emotive issue because it deals with an issue of conscience. It is important to deal with this issue in love and sensitivity to our brothers. While your facts are very true, your tone tends towards sarcasm and insensitivity, and this will not win over those struggling with this issue. I exhort you to contain these tendencies.

That said, others in this discussion have gone well beyond tendencies toward insensitivity. To boast of your drinking in this forum is to blatantly disregard the principles in 1 Cor. 8.

Re gluttony: You hit a crucial nail on the head. Many would reach for the mite in the eye of the brother who has a beer in his hand, while struggling not to be overbalanced by their own gut hanging over their belt. Not to mention the plank poking out of their own eye.
