The epistles of the New Testament written to churches were all written to congregations that met in homes. Church buildings were built for another 200 years. God used these house churches to turn the Roman world upside down (Ac 17:6). Were house churches simply a response to persecution, or could they also reflect a purposeful size strategy for most effective ministry? Smaller, Spirit-filled congregations are, arguably, part of a much larger divine design. Small churches today still have the same great potential to advance God's kingdom in the love and power of the Holy Spirit.
