There is nothing more powerful in the life of a person than the power of a cleansed conscience. Over the past weeks we have been hearing how the sacrifices of the Old Covenant were unable to perfect the conscience of the worshipper- they could not put sin away? In fact, as we hear this week, in Hebrews 10:1-18, those sacrifices served as a reminder of sin every year. But Christ has come and has done what the law could not do. He has 'put away sin' once for all. He has purified our conscience. He has sanctified us through the offering of his body. And his 'sitting down at the right hand of God' demonstrates that, as far as sacrifices go, his priestly work is finished and effective. "By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified." We no longer need to carry the heavy burden of our sin. We no longer need to be weighed down with guilt. We need not fear condemnation from God. We do not need to justify ourselves, or try to atone for our wrong doing. Christ has done it all, once for all. The is the power and freedom of a cleansed conscience, given freely to all who draw near to God in faith through our Great High Priest.
