Obadiah prophesized about the future ruin of Edom for his betrayal against Judah. Edom was the people of Esau, Jacob's brother who sold his birthright. The people of Edom did not allow Israel to pass by their territory when Moses was coming from Kadesh-Barnea to Canaan (Num.20:14). During the time of Joram, king of Judah (890-885 BC) Edom collaborated in the invasion led by the Philistines and the Arabians, so the Lord sent judgment against Edom through the prophet Obadiah (Ob.1: ) and this prophecy was fulfilled around 582 BC when Nebuchadnezzar took over that city. Some people say that Herod Agrippa II was the last Idumean (Greek word for Edom) dying in 93 AD.
