Through looking at the events in Matthew 4, Julian Riddle unpacks how Satan uses tempts us to depart from trusting in God and to put our trust in ourselves. Satan wants us to believe that we can achieve a good thing through a bad action. He poses the question to us: "What supposed good thing do you have your heart set on and what are you willing to do to achieve it?" If the answer to that question is "anything", then we are ripe for the temptations of the evil one.
Jesus was confronted with three temptations: 1) Self Provision: I'll take care of myself 2) Self Glory: I'll promote myself 3) Self Determination: I'll protect myself
Christ answered each of Satan's temptations by yielding to the gospel and trusting His Father's provision, promotion, and protection. So, by the power of the Holy Spirit, should we also yield to Christ to care for us. This is what repentance is all about - turning to Christ who is our King and our Savior.
