There can be huge differences in any group, in any church. Some share the spirit of Jesus; others do not. We have a great lesson in the conversation that followed Mary's anointing of Jesus. She was criticised for extravagance, impracticality, and waste, but Jesus defended her. She had come to value and share his spirit. The others did not take account of his death; she did. The others thought only of costs and benefits; she saw the generosity of God (to her) and loved what she saw. If Jesus gave himself, it was not wrong for her to give her most valued possession to honour him. There is time for everything, and that was the time to honour Jesus - the poor would always give opportunity for charity. It reminds us of the holy extravagance of God - why would he give so much to sinners? It reminds us that he is able to provide for our service to him when we spend on his behalf. It reminds us that worship is important in its own right, not just for any benefits it might bring. It is a challenge to our niggardly spirit, and an example that Christ still holds up for all to see and honour.
