Jesus' promises to return in glory are accompanied by exhortations to prepare. This passage contains several of those warnings.
The coming of the Lord has a certainty and an uncertainty about it. The certainty - He IS coming. The uncertainty - it is not for us to know the day or the hour of his coming.
Reminiscent of the Exodus, the Jews were to be dressed and ready...a reminder for being knowledgeable and prepared. So also, we are to be dressed (in the Word). We are to be children of the light, walking in the light, and so having our lamps ready for the coming of the Groom. In the tradition of the Jewish weddings, no one but the groom knew when he would come and the wedding feast would begin. So, we ought always to be prepared.
