In our post Enlightenment age, few actually believe in demonic activity. Perhaps it exists in third world countries, but not here. Actually, it is all around us. The scripture lays out what it means to be held captive to the evil one and it is something every Christian experienced before his conversion. It is also something we see in people around us every day. We don't see the evil spirits doing the work, but we do see their work. We simply need to reckon with what the Bible tells us about that work. What Jesus teaches here is that NO ONE can enter the strong man's house and plunder the property unless he is stronger. That means that only Christ can drive out Satan. Many of us have experienced the disappointment of having tried to witness to someone only to see them remain in darkness. We have tried to talk sense into people and failed. We have tried to help people see their need of Christ only to be rebuffed. We have invited people to church and they won't come. Why? Because they are captive to Satan and there is NO hope for escape unless Christ comes with power and binds the evil one.
