The famine is severe, the brothers have been sent to Egypt since it is where the food is. They met "The Man" who frightened them with his power and his suspicions. They have been imprisoned for three days and told to choose a hostage to leave in Egypt until the youngest brother comes. They have connected the things that are happening to them with the things they did to their brother, Joseph.
God's judgment upon them becomes even more clear to them during this fourth day as "The Man" selects the one who bears the most responsibility for their sins against Joseph and their father.
Now, their fear is compounded. And that is nothing compared to the fear of starvation for their families when their father hears what happened, and what must be done before they will be allowed to purchase more food. And then, there is the problem of the money with which they had paid for the food; or so they had thought.
The brothers are so blinded by their guilty consciences that they are unable to see the grace which "The Man" has extended to them. Jacob is so blinded by grief that he cannot see the grace "The Man" has extended to them.
There is also the matter of a substitute. Reuben offers his sons and his offer is rejected. Judah offers himself. This is such a beautiful picture of what the Word of God who was to take on human flesh had done before the foundation of the universe.
