The newest Nike commercial has created quite a stir, for it features the voice and a few images of Colin Kaepernick, the football player who has led in kneeling instead of standing when the national anthem is played at the beginning of an NFL game. One particular snippet many have found offensive. It's the picture of Kaepernick and the words, 'Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything!' It is important to stand up for one's beliefs, to be willing to stand alone if necessary and to sacrifice everything. Peter believed that God saved Jews and Gentiles alike through faith in Jesus and not by keeping the law. He regularly ate with his Gentile brothers in Christ at Antioch, that is, until a contingency of Jews from Jerusalem came to Antioch, and Peter withdrew, fearing them. He played the hypocrite. There was a disconnect between what he believed and how he acted. Paul confronts Peter's hypocrisy. Paul stands for the truth even if he must stand alone for much was at stake: the truth of the gospel, the unity of the church, and the future usefulness of Peter! We too are called to stand for the truth, even if it means standing alone or sacrificing everything!
