John Bunyan's, The Holy War, is an accurate depiction of God's way of salvation. Through the work of His Son—Emmanuel, Jesus Christ—God successfully and completely secures the salvation for His people. Jesus' life of obedience earns righteousness for them and His death on the cross provides atonement for sin for them.
And this salvation is provided to sinners wholly by grace. The only way it is received is by faith—taking God at His Word by trusting Jesus Christ as Lord.
Paul writes the book of Romans in the New Testament in order to explain this good news of salvation. Specifically, he shows how God's grace works in this good news, this gospel.
In our text this morning we come to the last two verses of Romans 5 where Paul almost breaks out in a doxology of praise for the sovereign, reigning grace of God in salvation. He does this to show us how free salvation is—how willing God is to save anyone and everyone—and to reassure those who are saved that the grace that saved them is sovereign and will keep them saved forever.
