• Erroneous Ideas of the Purpose of the Lord’s Supper

• Three Aspects to the Purpose of the Lord’s Supper

I. For a Seal or Confirmation of Our Faith (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25)

• Reassuring Our Hearts in Two Ways:

1. The Penalty for Our Sins is Truly Paid – Christ’s “Body Which is Broken For You” (1 Cor. 11:24; Isa. 53:3-7)

• Our Sins “Laid Upon Him” - Imputed to Him (Isa. 53:6)

2. The One Sacrifice of Christ was Sufficient to Pay for all Our Sins Past, Present, and Future (Hebrews 9:12; 24-26; 10:18)

II. To Signify and Testify of Our Union with Christ in the Bond of Love (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)

• United with Christ the True Believer has Died to Sin to No Longer Serve Sin (Romans 6:11-13)

• United in Christ the True Believer Serves Christ in the Bond of Love (Heidelberg Catechism #76; Phil. 2:1-4)

III. To Make a Public Profession of Our Faith (Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:26-32)

• “Proclaim,” or Announce to the World Christ’s Death (1 Corinthians 11:26)

• A Warning (1 Corinthians 11:27-32)
