Psalm 116 contains an unknown Psalmist's reflection on a time of difficulty and the Lord's kindness in sustaining him through it and in answering his prayers. Verse 12 contains both a question and an expression of praise, asking "What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me?" He lists seven appropriate responses to the Lord's grace, but ultimately it is not his commitment to somehow repay the Lord, but his desire to receive the salvation that God offers, pictured here as "the cup of salvation", that is the most significant. The Psalm is not only a stirring testimony of answered prayer, but is also a picture of the gospel, for we who have trusted Christ can echo his sentiment, "You have rescued my soul from death", and eternal death in particular.
