I. Deterioration within the Church
A. The Scriptural early warning system (Revelation 9.7-11).
B. The eighth century visual aids controversy. Those depicted viewed as intercessors and objects of adoration.
C. God's instituted aids. The water of baptism (Acts 22.14-16). The bread and wine of the Lord's Supper (I Corinthians 11.23-25).

II. Dangers from without the Church
A. Aggression predicted (Revelation 9.13-21).
B. Aggression experienced. At various times during this period, Islam continued to pose a serious threat.
C. Aggression spiritually ineffective. Despite these solemn judgements the survivors were no better spiritually (Rev. 9.20-21).
III. Defence in the Church
A. The carnal defence is to be shunned (Matthew 16.18). Military evangelism but 2 Corinthians 10.3.
B. The spiritual defence is to be embraced. (2 Corinthians 10.4-5).
