Second Samuel is about David's life and reign as king of Israel, paralleled by Second Chronicles 11-29.
David will reign from 1010-970 BC. Seven and one-half years over Judah and the last thirty-three years over all the tribes of Israel.
Chapters 1-4 cover the the time he reigned over Judah picking up with details about the report of Saul's death and his three sons deaths, to David and his response to that news.
The man bringing the news gives a twisted version of the details and pays dearly for having done so.
David's lament for Saul reveals is godly character as he spoke with respect, without bitternes blinding him to the fact of God having used Saul to lead Israel.

There should be no bitterness or lack of forgiveness in the life of the believer. 5. We should be careful the unbeliever is not given occasion to rejoice over the downfall of a believer. 6. Our testimony is always on the line so we always need to do what will honor the Lord.
