What conclusion can you make if 300 men defeat 135,000 men? Do you boast of your shrewd strategy or great military tacticians? All you can explain is that salvation is of the Lord. What we see in this text is God stripping His people of their sense of sufficiency and power, so that when the victory is won - the victory may be ascribed solely to the power of God - a principal operative not merely in the days of Gideon, but throughout the generation and lives of the people of God. Whether it is defeating Midianites or bearing up under trial or the ongoing warfare with sin - it would appear that the great interest of God is NOT our sense of sufficiency and accomplishment, but rather, the proclamation of His supremacy and all-sufficient power.
