This sermon presents the great problem of all people. Our inability to keep God’s law requires that we have someone to stand in our place. While the shift in Israel from a Judge to a king has given the people a representative to stand in their place, this chapter shows that Saul is woefully inadequate for this task. The chapter ends with Samuel in mourning, but the Scriptures call us to put our trust in the LORD who will provide, rather than sinful man.
