God's redemptive plan was taking a huge step forward here. He now was ready to reveal more of the nature of His own kingdom and glory as He would prefigure the role of Christ in an earthly king. And this indeed would be shocking to Samuel. Secondly, the people of God's rejection ultimately had as its object NOT Samuel, BUT God! The positioning of the pronouns make them emphatic: “They have not rejected YOU, they have rejected ME!”
