Verses 1-7 reveal to us not only that we as Christians should be good citizens, but also that governments are held to a standard of rule and function that is set by God's law, not the whims of the rulers themselves. How we obey our governments while rejecting both pietism and state created worship is ultimately a matter of knowing and holding fast to God's Word, and calling our leaders to repentance and faith in Christ, the fulfillment of the law.
