Like the words "grace" and "redeem," the word "faithful" is too often glossed over as a mere sound with which we are acquainted.
But "faithful" means reliable and trustworthy. A faithful man is one who can be trusted to carry out what he has promised.
The Scriptures not only command us to believe in God and trust in Him, but they also assert that God is faithful.
That is, that God is trustworthy - that He keeps His promises, and should be relied upon.
He has the power to fulfill His promises. He has the will or desire to fulfill them. He was not coerced into making them, and things will never turn out differently from what He thought when He made the promises. He also has the integrity to keep His promises.
Thus, God is faithful and ought to be believed and relied upon in everything He says and everything He does.
God desires His people to trust in Him, and therefore He repeatedly describes Himself in Scripture as being Faithful.
Thus, God described Himself as faithful when He called on Israel to trust in Him and obey Him. Sarah found God Faithful to His promise of a son. God is Faithful to grant relief and escape from trials to His people so that we may be able to bear them.
God is faithful to preserve His people Blameless and to perfect us in the end, because He promised those things to those who trust in Him.
Most telling, God declared Himself faithful to His suffering servant, our Lord Jesus in His humanity. God promised Him that He would be the salvation of not just Israel, but of all nations. Christ relied upon the Faithfulness of God when He went to dark Calvary to save His people.
