Rightly understood, this simple parable dismantles the soteriology of the majority of churches under the rubric of Christendom. Just as Jacob was loved and Esau was hated by God, likewise the wheat, God's elect children, are destined to be brought home to live with the Lord in glory for all eternity, while the tares will be sent to everlasting punishment where the wrath of God abides upon them forever. And so the role of the gospel is not to populate heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished that apart from any help from us. Rather the role of the gospel and the Lord's Church is not to turn tares into wheat as so many suppose but rather to strengthen, edify and comfort God's elect people - the wheat.
