What place do freedom and rights have? They are touted as prime values for Western society. The appearance of Christ changes all this for those who hear his voice and receive his grace. Paul says he was not disobedient to what he saw in Christ. He subjected everything else, including his personal rights and freedoms, to the greater concern of others knowing what he knew. Communication is a tricky business at any time, and especially when communicating the gospel. From Paul's point of view, it can't be done if we are more interested in our rights than in the love of Christ.
Freedom from the intrusion of what others need from us sounds attractive at first, but there is a greater joy, and that is, making ourselves servants of others so as to let them see the goodness of God in Christ. This includes understanding the things that endanger the faith of others and making sure we don't trip them up by our so called freedom. May the Lord himself visit us and show us the rich life he has for us.
