"For just as the Father raises the dead and give them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgement to the Son." With this reminder of Jesus' words from John 5:20-21, we've just stepped back into the middle of a heated exchange between the Galilean rabbi and Jerusalem's Jews. It started when Jesus healed an old invalid on the Sabbath, telling him to get up, pick-up his pallet, and walk. That healing, in the shadow of Jerusalem's temple, got the man in trouble with the Jews, leading him to point out Jesus as his Sabbath healer. The Jews (v.16) immediately persecuted Jesus. But Jesus fired back by declaring His authority to heal (work) like God, who is constantly at work, an authority Jesus has because Jesus is God's Son. The Jews recognized that as a declaration of deity.
Let's continue by examining John 5:25-29. Jesus doubled down on His declaration of deity by developing His claim to grant eternal life and render judgement (vv.21-24). He spoke of the dead who hear (and by implication, those who don't), anticipating a judgement of the redeemed and a judgment of the condemned.
The Son of God wants you to hear an offer of life and a declaration of judgment. 1. The gift of life for some (vv.25-27). 2. The reality of judgment for all (vv.28-29).
