Gamaliel was one of the most respected rabbis in the Sanhedrin. He was the grandson of Hillel, the founder of one branch of Judaism. His most outstanding student, Saul of Tarsus seemed to drift toward the school of Shammai, which was more harsh and zealous in tone. Though a member of the Sanhedrin, Gamaliel defended the early Christians, and warned the other Jewish leaders that they should leave them alone because they might be fighting against God.
