The text deals with a transition from the Dispensation of the Law and the Mosaic Covenant into the Dispensation of Grace and the New Covenant. Apollos was what many would call a layman in today's terminology. He was a saved Jew with extensive knowledge of the Old Testament Scriptures and “eloquent” in his ability to stand in the synagogues expounding the truths that he knew deeply. However, he did not yet know of Jesus as the Christ. He knew “the baptism of John” and was prepared for, and looking toward, the soon appearing of the Messiah. He did not know that Jesus was the Messiah or that the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus was “the way” to which the Old Testament Scriptures referred. Apollos understood that “the way” was through faith, but he did not understand that after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, his faith needed to rest in the objective facts accomplished through the “finished” work of redemption.
