A local liberal religious leader published a column in the newspaper proclaiming that "Jesus didn't teach capital punishment."
When a man leaves behind the truth of the Bible, and says that it "contains" truth but also errors, then he is left with no firm foundation for truth. If we abandon the inerrancy of God's Word, it can then mean anything we like.
This particular minister has a very bad track record for accurately portraying our Savior, as he appeared in the title role of the blasphemous rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." In that production, he put words in Jesus' mouth to the effect that Jesus didn't know why He had to die!
God's Word is very clear: murderers are to be put to death. While we should be careful to proceed justly, nevertheless, God's command to all mankind has never been countermanded.
Certainly Jesus never disputed God's Law in this matter. After all, He is God manifest in the flesh. While Jesus preached that we as individuals are to be kind and forgiving to our enemies, and not to seek vengeance, He never revoked God's command to execute murderers.
Indeed, the Apostle Paul reiterates Christ's commands in Romans 12, following with the declaration that the government is God's minister for vengeance against wicked men.
Further, Jesus Himself taught that He would execute capital punishment in the great judgment.
But in His incarnation, His purpose was not to judge the world. Rather, He took our place in God's judgment for our sin! His death validates and confirms the punishment of death for all sin.
No sin will be excused in the end. Only death will satisfy justice. But our Savior died in our place! The Saints go free!
