Having prepared the believer mentally and spiritually for the battle in which he is engaged by both sober admonition and positive encouragement, Paul now identifies the specific parts of the Christian's armor. Twice he has emphasized that we must “put on” the “whole armor.” Therefore, we need to give earnest heed to every piece of that armor as vital to our victory, and without which, we are vulnerable to Satan's attacks. The first piece is the girdle of truth. The leather girdle, or belt, was so important in Bible times because it bound up loose-fitting outer clothes so that one could be active on his feet.
We need to be armored with the belt of God's truth – both in our heads and in our hearts. We need not fear trials or persecution but hypocrisy. If we do not have truth in the heart, we will be vulnerable to Satan's attacks. We need to be more concerned with our inner spirituality than with our outward reputation. Let us therefore “gird up the loins of our mind” (1 Pet. 1:13).
