IF the Bible had only a human author, the book of Jonah would only have three chapters, not four. We love happy endings and fairy tales and stories where the good guys win, the bad guys lose, and the poor young man wins the hand of the beautiful maiden he has rescued.
Chapter 3 ends on a very high note with the spiritual awakening in Nineveh. As far as men are concerned, it would, therefore, make a grand finale to the book.
But not Chapter 4. It is not our kind of ending. It makes the book end on a sour note. It is a chapter filled with unhappiness. Jonah is unhappy with God's behaviour, and God is unhappy with Jonah's behaviour.
