INTRODUCTION: The days of Noah are especially important because of their similarities and parallels to the days preceding Christ’s second coming (Matthew 24:37-39). This story warns against falling into the corruption of the world. Our desire should be to follow the example of Noah who lived a holy, separated life before God and man.
I. THE CORRUPTION OF THE EARTH (Genesis 6:1-5)
A. Unholy Unions (Genesis 6:1-3)
1. The sons of God and the daughters of men (Genesis 6:1-2)
a. In scripture, the title “son(s) of God” is used of
1) angels (Job 1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38:7),
2) Adam (Luke 3:38)
3) Future redeemed Israelites (Hosea 1:10)
4) New Testament saints (John 1:12; Romans 8:14; Philippians 2:15)
b. In addition, God calls Israel, as a nation, “my son, even my firstborn” (Exodus 4:22) and Jesus is identified as “the Son of God” (Matthew 16:16; John 1:34).
c. For additional notes on this passage see the section entitled Background Resources.
2. Grace lasting 120 years (Genesis 6:3)
a. This does not suggest a limit to man’s life span as some have taught, but indicates the time allotted for men to repent before the flood came.
b. Noah had 120 years to build the ark and preach righteousness (2 Peter 2:5).
